RULES & GUIDELINES FOR CONTESTANTS (MALES & FEMALES)
CATEGORIES AND AGE RESTRICTIONS
MALES
- Category A - Full Quran - 24 years and younger
- Category B - 15 Consecutive Juz - 24 years and younger
- Category C - 5 Consecutive Ajzaa - 16 years and younger
- Category D - 1 Juz - 11 years and younger on date of competition
FEMALES
- Category A - Full Quran - 30 years and younger
- Category B - 15 Consecutive Juz - 24 years and younger
- Category C - 5 Consecutive Ajzaa - 18 years and younger
- Category D - 1 Juz - 13 years and younger on date of competition
- A contestant must be a South African citizen and/or holder of a South African legal resident permit and/or possess legal refugee status.
- At the discretion of the SANQC’s Board of Governors (BOG), a contestant can be disqualified if found to be over-qualified to participate in categories C and D. The contestant will be allowed to change his application to participate in either categories A or B.
- A professional reciter of the Noble Quran is not eligible to participate in the competition.
- a professional is defined, and not confined to, as a reciter that is recognised nationally and/or internationally as a recognised, well renown Qari.
- The final decision to confirm and/or accept/revoke participation in the competition and/or any category is within the sole and absolute discretion of the SANQC’s Board of Governors (BOG).
- Category D winners do not participate in the South African National Quran Memorisation finals.
- A contestant must attain a minimum of 85% aggregate in the regional competition in order to qualify for the South African National Quran Memorisation Competition finals.
PARAMETERS OF ADJUDICATION
1. ḤIFẒ
Ø Ḥifẓ mistakes include Al-Laḥn Al-Jalī (A mistake which alters the text and meaning).
Ø Substituting one letter with another.
Ø Not reciting Basmallah at the beginning of a Surah
Ø Unable to commence recitation after being prompted with the name of the Sūrah only.
2. TAJWĪD
Ø Al-Laḥn Al-Khafī: That which does not alter the meaning but the beauty of the words diminishes.
Ø Errors in pronunciation of letters or not pronouncing the letters from the correct Makhraj.
3. WAQF
Ø Pausing and restarting recitation at appropriate places.
Ø Signs which will be taken into consideration: lām/alif (waqf ḥasan/qabīḥ) and mīm (waqf lāzim).
4. FLUENT RENDITION
Ø A contestant is assessed on quality of presentation, confidence, fluency and reverence (khushū).
Ø A melodious voice is a gift from Allah Ta’ala and thus it is unfair to judge a contestant on this.
